I use 75 ohm hardline on some U/VHF runs and ignore the loss, swr is
1.3 to 1 caused by the mismatch. At higher power levels it may be worth
worrying about.
Also remember that unjacketed aluminum hardline will have a dissimilar
metals problem with the galvanized tower and must be jacketed at any point it
touches the tower. I used a large diameter garden hose and
cut slices that i wrap the hardline in

After all those contacts with Pennsylvania stations, you can
apply for 2 operating awards. Both PA and out-of-state hams may
apply for them.
Nittany ARC sponsors an award for confirmed contacts with all 67

also offered in different classes for fewer counties confirmed.
For complete award rules and application procedures, write to
Awards Manager, Nittany ARC, PO Box 614, State College, PA
16804-0614, or send packet mail to K3CM @ W3YA.PA.
Harrisburg RAC sponsors the Pennsylvania Keystone Award for
direct 2-way contacts with 100 different PA ham stations. The
award can be endorsed annually. QSL cards are not required. No
retransmitted contacts may be counted. For complete award rules
and information on required log extracts, write to Award Manager

Subject: Singapore's Ham Laws (or: we in the US have it easy)
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
The following appeared on the QRP email newsgroup. I'm posting
it to show US hams how severe other countries can be in regard
to licensing. Dan gave me permission to post it. It starts with
Dan asking the QRP group for an IC-22A - he needs one quickly
since to get his license (which he's been waiting for over one
year) his station first has to be inspected by the government
and only certain radios are approved by the govt (the IC-22A
is one on them; on xtal rigs allowed on 2M).
After that the laws only get more severe...
Jeff NH6IL

> -> Anyone have an IC-22A for sale?

> I have one but was not interested in selling it... Just curious, what are

No idea how much it costs but am desperately looking for one. Was told that it
should not be more than 100 bux. The reason for the desperation is that the
authorities want to give me a license but insist on seeing my equipment first!
Yes, dumb, but they're the law.
Anyway, they've only approved exactly 10 models for 2M use and exactly 10
models are out of production, and more than 10 years old. There are a few
models that I am looking for:-
1) Icom IC-215
2) Icom IC-22A
3) Kenwood TR-2200A, TR-2200G
4) Kenwood TR-7200, TR-7200G
5) Yaesu FT-2F
6) Yaesu FT-221
You may try other CRYSTAL controlled only models but bear in mind that each
radio you submit for type approval will cost you $200 additional fee. Yep, I
could buy another rig with that kind of money if I had it.
If you're wondering, they DON'T allow ANY kind of synthesized 2M equipment
under ANY circumstances, and have no plans for allowing them. The reason is
that amateurs are only allowed about 5 or 6 spot frequencies on the 2M band.
Thus you can see the reason for my desperation.
Among other things I had to do was:-
1) Submit 2 character references
2) Sign a statutory declaration of secrecy at the high court
3) Give model and serial # of radio AND antenna! (must be < 10w ERP)
4) Give schematic of installation and antenna
5) Submit letter from Landlord approving installation of antenna
All this before they even consider issuing me a license. I need to get this
radio by next month cos that's when they are supposed to give the license to
me. I've got all my other papers ready and submitted most of them, now I need
to get a radio (an almost extinct one at that). After all this, there is still
no guarantee that they will issue a license, and they are not required to give
a reason.
Oh, did I mention? They will send people to inspect my station to ensure that I
am complying with all regulations AND that my equipment complies with what is
declared. If I buy a new radio, that too needs declaration and approval first.
This is a temporary restricted license I am referring to (novice) but I expect
my general in December. For HF radios, there are about 35 approved models for
use. $200.00 for approving anything else. The restricted class has just (less
than 2 months) been implemented.
So, don't bother bringing any synthesized sets here. Same thing for handheld
ones. People have done that, no luck with them so far. Foreigners must be here
at least 3 months to even qualify to apply for a license.
In order to operate mobile, you need to apply for special permission/license.
Otherwise, for FDs you need to apply for special permission also. Your license
allows operation ONLY from your present location, as declared. If you move or
change hear, you need to inform them in writing.
Computer logging of QSO's is not officially permitted.
Spot checks are conducted from time to time at your station to ensure
compliance.
Maximum power allowed for the first year - 25w, thereafter 100w. For VHF, max
power is 10w ERP. I was told (unofficially) that YAGIs are not permitted. On
the first year, the general licensee can only operate A1A and A1B.
Special permission required to operate in most (if not all) bands above 2M.
Oh, yes. The theory test costs $40 ($20 for students) and the morse test costs
$50 ($25) for students, restricted license $25 and general license $50. License
needs to be renewed yearly, failure to do so will mean needing to retake morse
test and to reapply. Theory tests are conducted once a year, and morse test
twice a year. You pass the test, submit papers, then they might give you a
license.
There's a big monitoring station around which listens in for abuse of channels,
misuse etc. though this is not publicized, it is a well known fact.
Come to think of it, its probably easier to buy a gun in US than a radio here.
73,
daniel

In article 4087, brownjeb@delphi.com writes:
"I've had my license for 7 years, and have never heard of a youth
amateur radio club. Does anyone know of any?"
When my 8-year-old got his license, I made up a mailing list from
the QRZ CD-ROM and sent a letter to the 63 hams aged 16 and under in
the 12-city area around us. The letter included a preaddressed,
pre-stamped postcard inviting them to fill in their call sign and
be put on a permanent mailing list for group activities aimed at
their interests and schedules. Of 63 cards that went out, only
four of these (PRE-STAMPED!) cards came back, and our attempts to
get even this small group together -- for example, to drive down
to San Diego (about 2 hours) for the Southwest Division convention -- have
consistently run afoul of soccer, football, family activities, and
the like.
I would welcome *your* suggestions as to what kind of things a young
operators' group could do that would make it more attractive than some
of the other things that seem to fill young people's free time these days.
Transmitter hunts are the only we've identified so far, and we hope to
do one this autumn. But it's tough.
Even grown-up clubs seem to have a tough time these days: ours is
looking for a president for next year, and I *know* what my XYL would
say if I took on the job while we still have two kids in pre-school...
Eagerly seeking ideas for young-ham activities here as well.
